Ginger is both used as herb and spice and it is known for its fresh and spicy taste. It has been used for thousands of years both for medicinal and culinary properties. It is rich in active ingredients that act variety of roles in our bodies and its most popular use is as a remedy for morning sickness. Currently, ginger has been studied as a very hopeful ingredient in the fight against cancer. Numerous research has been done in the past years, and doctors are hopeful in its power related to cancer.
Ginger has played a vital role in helping cancer patients deal with their nausea and inflammation during their chemotherapy. However, it seems that its effects are even more powerful according to new studies.
Researchers from Georgia State University did a study on ginger and its effects on living cells. They found out that “ginger extract induced growth-inhibition and death on cancerous cells, while leaving the healthy cells alone.”
In contrast to chemotherapy which can sometimes even increase the rate of metastasis, this plant doesn’t have side effects.
“Whatever manipulations we’re doing to tumors can inadvertently do something to increase the tumor numbers to become more metastatic, which is what kills patients at the end of the day,” said Dr. Raghu Kalluri, working on an unrelated study at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
In a study using experimental mice, the extract shrunk prostate tumors by 56% and at the same time it reduced inflammation and provided anti-oxidants.
Except for these, there have been 17 more studies linked to the anti-cancerous benefits of ginger. It has also been linked to healing of over 101 other diseases.
Ginger can be consumed in various ways. There is ginger tea, supplements, extracts and of course you can eat it raw and enjoy its health benefits.
