Home Remedies for Water Retention

When the body retains excess fluid , this condition is known as water retention or edema.  Namely, water accumulates in the whole body or just in certain parts such as feet or ankles.

Water retention can be categorized into two categories:

  • Generalized edema – swelling is present throughout the entire body
  • Localized edema- it affects only specific parts of the body

It doesn’t matter from what type of edema you are suffering from, what really matters is how to get rid of it.

What Causes Water Retention?

These are the following causes for water retention :

  • Excessive sugar and salt in diet –.
  • Kidney problems
  • Premenstrual syndrome edema
  • During pregnancy
  • Staying in one position for too long

There are various natural remedies that can help you with this condition:

Minimize your salt intake

Excess intake of sodium may cause excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, so you should start avoiding foods that contain high levels of salt and processed foods. You may as well try to restrain yourself from adding salt to all of the food you eat.


Dandelion has diuretic properties, so it is an excellent choice for removing excess water from your body.

It is also rich in  potassium, which helps reduce sodium levels in the body. Moreover, being rich in magnesium, it is good for relieving pre-menstrual bloating.

Steep one teaspoon of dried dandelion herb in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes. Strain and drink this tea up to three times a day.

You can also take dandelion tincture or supplements (500 mg one to three times a day).

Before starting any herbal remedy such as dandelion tea, make sure you consult your doctor as it may interfere with certain drugs.


Parsley is also a great water retention remedy  that can be very helpful.

Add a couple of teaspoons of dried parsley in a cup of water. Boil the solution until it starts vaporizing, then let it cool for 10 minutes. Consume the tea three times every day until you see improvement.

Optionally, you can mix fresh parsley with lemon juice and drink the solution.

Drink Lots Of Water To Get Rid Of Water Retention

You may have a delusion that you should reduce your intake of water because of the water retention problem you have.

In contrary, if you drink enough water, about 7-8 glasses each day, it will eliminate excess salt and water from your kidneys more effectively. Drinking a warm glass of water with juice of a lemon every morning will also prove immensely beneficial.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice helps flush out excess fluid and toxins from your body.

Mix two tablespoons of lemon juice in a cup of warm water. You can also sweeten it with honey.

Drink the solution.

Continue taking this remedy once daily for a few days or until you see improvement.


Nettle is a natural diuretic, so it works well to prevent and reduce water retention.

Boil a cup of water mixed with one teaspoon of powdered nettle root.

Let it steep for about 10 minutes.

Drink this tea three times a day until you see improvement.

Epsom Salt

If you take an Epsom salt bath you will get rid of that bloated tummy, and also resolve your water retention problem through a process called reverse osmosis. The process works by cleaning out excessive fluids from your body. It can also cleanse from accumulated bodily toxins. The bath is extremely relaxing and will soothe your body and calm your nerves.

Just add two cups of Epsom salt next time when you plan on taking a warm bath. Enjoy the experience for at least 15 minutes. Repeat once every second day

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can replenish your body with potassium. This, in turn, can help your body to reduce sodium levels. And we all know what sodium does – it retains water in the organism!

Just add a teaspoon of the vinegar into a glass of water. Drink the enriched water twice a day. If you like, increase the dosage of apple vinegar by an additional tablespoon per glass.

You can also use the vinegar to soak your feet in it. This will be of great use for aid in fluid retention in your feet. Just soak your feet in a hot foot bath made from apple cider vinegar and warm water. Enjoy for at least 10 minutes.

An additional benefit from soaking your feet in apple cider vinegar is the reduced foot odor

Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is yet another famous home remedy to cure fluid retention because of its diuretic properties. It is also a great source of  minerals like  calcium, magnesium and potassium that help maintain proper fluid balance. So, drink a cup of unsweetened cranberry juice daily for relief. You can also take cranberry pills.
