A very important sign of your overall health is how often you urinate on a daily basis. There are various factors that can affect how often you visit the restroom, but on average healthy adults urinate in every 4 to 6 hours. You may urinate more or less depending on the drinks and foods you consume, the medications you take or any health issues you may experience.
Urinary frequency and your health
Four to ten times of urination a days is considered as healthy. However it is not unusual these numbers to be higher. That depends on many factors:
- One of the factor is the age
- Another factor is the amount of liquids you intake and what you drink
- Your bladder size is also a factor
- Medication usage and medical conditions such as urinary tract infection or diabetes can also affect how often you urinate.
As previously mentioned ,certain medical conditions might affect the frequency of your peeing. Conditions that cause excessive urination include:
- Hypo or hypercalcemia – low or high levels of calcium in your blood. This unbalance can upset the urine flow in your body.
- Sickle cell anemia – It affects the urine concentration and kidney function. So people suffering from this medical condition urinate more frequently.
- Diabetes – The extra sugar in the blood shifts fluids and you urinate more often.
- Urinary tract infection – This condition is more common in women but it is also present in men as well. It causes an urgent need to urinate, even if your bladder is empty. A burning sensation while you urinate is also possible symptom.
- People with high blood pressure, heart diseases or poor kidney function often take medications that are called diuretics. These medications pull extra fluid out of the blood stream and move it into the kidney. Taking diuretics may cause you to urinate more frequently.
- On the other hand, there are some medical conditions that cause a lower-than –average output of urine. Men usually experience this if they have enlarged prostate. It blocks the flow of urine out of the bladder and makes you unable to empty your bladder completely, even after urination.
Tips for healthy urinary tract
Here are a few tips to decrease genital and urinary irritation:
- Use unscented soap for sensitive skin for the genital area
- Wear cotton and loose underwear
- Avoid wearing tight leggings or jeans
- Avoid excessive drinking of alcohol, coffee or soda and try drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water every day
- Consume foods rich in probiotics such as yogurt and kefir
- Avoid smoking cigarettes and artificial sweeteners that may cause bladder irritation.
